? : so Max, what is your history with Big D and the Kids’ Table?

MAX: I’m the original drummer.  I was in the band from ‘96-2000.  I recorded on their first two albums.  Shot by Lammi and Good Luck.

? : What’s it like to get back on the road with them?  And to play Ska again after such a long hiatus?

MAX: Man! It’s so great getting on the road with these guys again.  We all are such great friends, it’s been amazing just to be in the same room together, these shows are the icing of this trip.

As far as playing punk/ska again, it’s pretty demanding physically to play this music, but I always love a challenge.  I’ve been having fun learning their new stuff.  We’re not playing anything from the recordings I did with them back in the day.  I like the direction they’ve gone in and I’m digging playing these new tunes.
Side note: I’m also rehearsing with them on the stuff their writing for their new record.  There’s a 99.9% chance I’m gonna be the drummer on their new album. Yesterday we played the new stuff for their producer, Joe Gittleman (bass player/song writer for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones)…gonna be a great record!!

? : Where are you playing on this run?  And where are you most excited to play?

MAX: We’re playing Long Island, Irving Plaza NYC, New Jersey, 2 nights @ the Paradise in Boston, and Lupos in Providence RI.  We’re opening for The English Beat.

I’m most excited about the Boston shows.  It’s just perfect that we’re rocking shows in Boston.  That’s where this whole thing started!!!

Here’s a remix I did on tour. We’ve done a lot of the demos on our new album in the backseats of our tour-van. It helps to maintain sanity on all the long drives.  I hope you like the super-gritty drum tones we got.  It’s simply a Max MacVeety break we recorded in the balcony of a club, with only ONE mic on his drums cranked WAAYYYY beyond the distortion point.  I love gritty…

————————————————————————

OH while I’m here, a quick anecdote…  I went with Max and the homie Dave the other night, to go see the almighty FISHBONE at the Independent in SF.  We’ve all seen them hecka times so we knew it was going to be something to remember.  Anyhow, I decided it’d be fun to do some stage-diving.  I climbed up, threw up the horns, then dove back into the crowd.  Angelo (the lead singer) then pulled me right back on stage, put me in a friendly headlock, then had me sing the chorus to “Alcoholic” with him (one of my favorites of theirs).  I’m kinda mic shy so I did the best I could, dove back on to the crowd and swam back to Max and Dave to ask them how much of an ass I looked like.  Moral of the story is: if you haven’t seen Fishbone yet, GO!

My name is Max MacVeety. I play drums for the Oakland; Ca based Hip-hop crew Crown City Rockers.
I’ve always loved music. I started playing drums at age three. I’ve been playing, sitting-in, gigging, touring, studying, and teaching most of my life.

I’ve been blessed to have grown-up in a musical family. My father is a passionate musician (vocalist/guitarist) who is in it for life. His father (mygrandfather) is a tenor sax player who, at age 80, plays big band jazz in Florida. My great-great-great grandfather was a concert violinist from Prague Czechoslovakia. (He moved to Iowa in the 1800’s to teach music at the University of Iowa.)
I’m just carrying on the tradition.

I love all kinds of music, but really when it comes down to it Hip-hop music hits me in a place that no other music hits me. I feel very fortunate to be in a Hip-hop group and be able to play the one instrument that has been my life-long passion and inspiration. I hope you feel that when you come to a show…
